Dalen-Kjørholt 'Limestone' Mine, Kjørholt, Brevik, Porsgrunn, Telemark, Norway

A fine example of the rich amber coloured Calcites that came the recent 2007 find in Norway. This specimen is formed of diverging clusters of lustrous translucent Calcite crystals with a warm amber colour that glows when backlit. The crystals are complex scalenohedrons with a 'wheat sheaf' appearance, the largest crystal measuring to over 30mm in height. They are growing from the grey clay and massive Calcite matrix, and a different generation of small grey transparent scalenohedrons are present beneath the specimen. Later generations of Calcite include small single scalenohedrons; and sugary clusters of tiny sparkling Calcite crystals, scattered over the specimen and contrasting nicely by the greyish colour caused by incorporated clay.
